They were formed in 2000 by Taiyo Someya, Yusuke Nagai, and Kaori Sakakibara. They have released eight original studio albums to date. Their sound is based on influences from Brazilian music and Western music from the 60s and 70s, but with their own unique sense of floating added to it.

Lamp officially formed when Taiyo Someya and Yusuke Nagai, who had met in high school, were introduced to Kaori Sakakibara. At the start, Someya worked on all compositions largely alone, before showing them to Nagai and Sakakibara to practice and record.

I recall, it was in February of 2000 that, I, Taiyo Someya, with Yusuke Nagai, and Kaori Sakakibara, formed the group Lamp. It was at that time that we wrote songs together as a band and put together enough material for a demo tape. In 2001, in a small bar somewhere in Tokyo, we played our first show.
